The FMP School of Law invites the academic community to the book launch Who Takes Care of the Caregivers?, written by alumna Geórgia Manfroi, in yet another edition of the "Home-Grown Talent" Project, an initiative that highlights the careers and work of our alumni.
When a child is born with a disability, a rare disease, or a condition that requires constant care, an “atypical” mother is also born—almost always alone, overwhelmed, and without support. In this book, Geórgia Manfroi examines how intensive care falls disproportionately on women and analyzes the role (or lack thereof) of the state in creating this burden.
Drawing on Brazilian law and public policy, this book discusses how gender inequality shapes the daily lives of thousands of mothers who, with love and exhaustion, single-handedly sustain a routine marked by a lack of support. The book is divided into three parts: an analysis of the historical roots of gender inequality; a critical evaluation of the social security system (health care, social assistance, and social security); and a careful listening to the stories of mothers in atypical situations.
Combining data, theory, and personal experience, this book invites us to reflect: in a country that takes maternal care for granted, who takes care of the caregivers?
The event will be moderated by Professor Raquel Fabiana Lopes Sparemberger, Ph.D., providing a space for dialogue and reflection on the themes addressed in the book.
During the event, copies of the book will be on sale, and all proceeds will go to the Colo de Mãe Institute in Porto Alegre, an organization that does important work in providing shelter and support to mothers in non-traditional situations.
