On September 15 and 16, FMP held the International Congress on the Inter-American Human Rights System, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Protection of Vulnerable Groups. Organized by FMP’s Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Law, in partnership with the National Council of Public Prosecutors, the event took place in the institution’s auditorium in Porto Alegre, was streamed on the Foundation’s YouTube channel, and featured guests attending both in person and remotely.

Throughout the program, 16 panelists participated in the discussions, representing various Brazilian institutions as well as organizations and universities from Costa Rica, Germany, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. Among the participants were representatives from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the National Council of Justice, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Judiciary, the Public Defender’s Office, universities, and other institutions linked to the justice system.

“This conference is an opportunity to bring together different stakeholders to consider how the Brazilian government and the Public Prosecutor’s Office can act in accordance with the Inter-American Human Rights System, guided by the dignity of the human person and seeking ways to ensure that this system of protection becomes a reality in people’s lives.”, said Dr. Karen Luise Cruz, National Advisor to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The discussions addressed topics such as the application of standards established by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the protection of vulnerable groups, structural discrimination, and dialogue between the inter-American system and Brazilian institutions. The program also included remote presentations of research papers and discussions on institutional practices related to the protection of rights.

According to Dr. Anizio Pires, coordinator of the Graduate Program, holding this meeting underscores the importance of bringing institutions together and broadening the discussion on the protection of human rights. “It is a very important event, organized by the FMP in partnership with the National Council of Public Prosecutors, which plays a key role in the discussion of these issues.”

For FMP President Luciano de Faria Brasil, holding the conference reinforces the institution’s commitment to reflection and the exchange of knowledge on the protection of human rights. “Hosting an international conference like this at FMP represents an opportunity to strengthen dialogue among academia, the justice system, and international organizations, promoting the exchange of experiences and different perspectives. It is also a way to broaden the discussion on the challenges of protecting human rights and to contribute to the improvement of institutions.”, he points out.
