Joseane Mariéle Schuck, a professor at FMP, participated in the international seminar organized by UNHCR, which brought together researchers and experts to discuss the 75th anniversary of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the current challenges facing international protection.

From September 14 to 18, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) will host the 17th National Seminar of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair (CSVM) of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). This year, the event will be held in conjunction with the (Inter)national Seminar “Rethinking the International Refugee Regime 75 Years Later from the Perspective of the Global South,” along with the summer/winter school of the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN) Institute. Registration for the activities is still open and can be completed directly through the event’s registration portal. More information is available at repensandorefugio.com.

The event will bring together professors, researchers, students, representatives from international organizations, the Brazilian government, and civil society organizations, as well as refugees, to reflect on the contemporary challenges of international protection and on ways to strengthen more inclusive responses to forced displacement, in line with the realities of the Global South.

The program aims to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and practices related to forced displacement, statelessness, and the local integration of refugees, taking into account the changes that have shaped the international refugee regime in recent decades and the emerging challenges faced in different regions of the world.

Highlights include the panels at the (Inter)national Seminar, which will address topics related to the governance of displacement, international protection, access to rights, knowledge production, social participation, and experiences with reception and integration. The event will also feature activities aimed at strengthening academic and institutional cooperation among members of the national network of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair.

In addition to the academic discussions, the CSVM Outreach Dialogues will be open to the public. This is a space dedicated to the exchange of experiences regarding university outreach initiatives and processes of co-production of knowledge with refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals. The initiative aims to highlight practices developed at various institutions of higher education and to strengthen the role of universities in promoting inclusion and ensuring rights.

Implemented by UNHCR since 2003, in partnership with higher education institutions in Brazil and ten other countries, the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair has played a key role in promoting access to rights and services for refugees and asylum seekers in Brazil. Currently, the National Network of CSVMs brings together 54 institutions of higher education across all regions of the country.

Over the course of its editions, the National Seminar of the CSVM has established itself as one of the main forums for collaboration among academia, civil society organizations, international organizations, and government agencies to discuss refuge, migration, and statelessness in Brazil. The 2026 edition aims to broaden these discussions by highlighting the experiences, knowledge, and perspectives generated in the Global South and by people experiencing forced displacement themselves.

Information about registration for the (Inter)national Seminar and for the activities open to the public at the 17th National Seminar of the CSVM, as well as the complete program, is available on the event’s official website: repensandorefugio.com.
